U.S. Education Secretary Visits Boise Schools
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona visited Boise schools to announce a $6.5 million annual grant to expand community school programs in Idaho. This grant is part of a five-year Full-Service Community Schools initiative by the Biden Administration, benefiting 19 states and Washington, D.C. Community schools provide services beyond education, such as family support and healthcare. United Way of Treasure Valley will receive the Idaho grant.
Cardona praised Whitney Elementary School’s community program as a model, highlighting Idaho’s 41 community schools in 25 districts. The United Way has expanded community schools by partnering with local groups to offer diverse resources. Rural areas, like Marsing, benefit significantly from these services.
The Biden administration has increased funding for community school programs from $25 million to $150 million since 2020. Cardona’s visit acknowledged Idaho’s success in this area, noted by Idaho State Superintendent Debbie Critchfield.
Cardona also discussed mental health with Boise parents, addressing concerns about student relationships, teacher stress, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized co-curricular activities and advocated for better teacher pay and high school programs offering college credits.
